story, game or both?\u00a0 I think <em>Photopia<\/em> could be considered both story and game, because it uses both narrative elements and interactivity.\u00a0 However,\u00a0I would argue that\u00a0<em>Photopia<\/em> is\u00a0leaning more towards being a story\u00a0than a game.\u00a0 \u00a0 <em>Photopia<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0is a story about a girl named Alley.\u00a0\u00a0You can think of the colors as the glue or &#8220;narrative arc&#8221; that\u00a0holds everything together.\u00a0 It is interactive in the sense that the user assumes different roles as the story progresses.\u00a0 You become Alley&#8217;s mom, Alley&#8217;s father, even the boy who asks Alley to the school dance.\u00a0 The point of view\u00a0shifts and changes, but that&#8217;s something that can happen in a narrative too.\u00a0 <em>Photopia<\/em> is also interactive in the sense that\u00a0the user\u00a0has to connect the dots, but\u00a0the story ultimately remains the\u00a0same.\u00a0 In other words, the user cannot change the outcome of the story.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, I went into <em>Photopia<\/em> searching for this &#8220;big secret.&#8221;\u00a0 I went through it, waiting, waiting, waiting&#8230; and nothing.\u00a0 My big revelation didn&#8217;t\u00a0come at the end, like I was expecting,\u00a0but it\u00a0came in the middle, a little bit towards the end.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t even notice it until after I was finished.\u00a0 I think after you&#8217;ve gone through <em>Photopia<\/em> once, you should go through it a second time.\u00a0 All of the pieces seem to fall into place after that.\u00a0 Anyway, I think telling the story in the form of\u00a0an interactive fiction piece definitely makes the reader or player think outside the box.\u00a0 The fact that you assume these different roles means that you can look at the story from a variety of perspectives.\u00a0 In this way, the text engages the user.\u00a0 It keeps us interested.\u00a0 It&#8217;s just a bit frustrating when you can&#8217;t get the story to progress.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, yeah.\u00a0 I&#8217;m still trying to wrap my head around it.\u00a0 The big debate concerning interactive fiction &#8211;
