{"id":244,"date":"2008-10-11T17:05:57","date_gmt":"2008-10-11T21:05:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.samplereality.com\/gmu\/fall2008\/414\/?p=244"},"modified":"2008-10-11T17:05:57","modified_gmt":"2008-10-11T21:05:57","slug":"identity-identity-identity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.samplereality.com\/gmu\/fall2008\/414\/archives\/244","title":{"rendered":"Identity, identity, identity&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;;\">It\u2019s interesting to compare the new media pieces (especially \u201cWe Feel Fine\u201d) that aggregate individual discourse (blogs) into a visual, interactive whole, with the Claritas demographic tool we saw in class. <span> <\/span>Both seem to trivialize individuals. <span> <\/span>This feeling is less profound in \u201cWe Feel Fine,\u201d because the \u201cparticipants\u201d are being defined or categorized by theemotions they project.<span> <\/span>Still, they are reduced to blips and blobs, and the defining object itself (short text) is fragmentary. <span> <\/span>The Claritas tool is obviously more upsetting in this sense. <span> <\/span>We end up defined by the car we drive, and the square footage of our houses. <span> <\/span>At the same time (if I recall correctly), the categories are presented with cartoonish, idyllic pictures. <span> <\/span>This seems worse than a straightforward, un-illustrated presentation; you get dehumanized by becoming a consumer category and then are represented <span> <\/span>as a cartoon.<span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;;\">What all this seems to highlight is the ongoing transformation of identity in current society.<span> <\/span>The postmodern is obsessed with the plasticity and solipsism of perception.<span> <\/span>But in spite (or because) of the sheer amount of representational forms available to us,<span> <\/span>projecting this\u201cauthentic\u201d self to a greater community seems increasingly elusive.<span> <\/span>We become more and more fragmented as our means of representation expand. <span> <\/span>And in a culture obsessed with individuality,this is painful.<span> <\/span>I\u2019m beginning to wonder to what extent my interest in obscure and frequently transgressive media originated as a means of reclaiming or maintaining a strong sense of individuality, as opposed to simply authentic curiosity.<span> <\/span>It seems to be a \u201cchicken or the egg\u201d type of relationship. <span> <\/span>Are these obscure trappings on my Facebook identity simply a means of having a foothold in an increasingly \u201cinformation saturated\u201d world,<span> <\/span>or do they constitute a partof a \u201creal\u201d identity.<span> <\/span>And how would I know the difference in genesis?<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s interesting to compare the new media pieces (especially \u201cWe Feel Fine\u201d) that aggregate individual discourse (blogs) into a visual, interactive whole, with the Claritas demographic tool we saw in class.
