The Road Screenplay: Coca-Cola

This scene was based on the scene that occurs on page 22, in which they find a Coca-Cola and the father gives it to the son.

The scene starts off as the two characters are walking down the road and come across a supermarket, the camera angle is far away, we are watching them from a distance.

The camera then focuses on the inside of the supermarket, and it shows all of the different isles up close, there is no music playing, it was completely silent.  The camera closes up on pieces of decaying fruit, covered in flies.

The camera then switches to the two characters walking through the desolate store, and they come across two soda machines, obviously ransacked.  The man sticks his hand in the soda machine and pulls out a Coca-Cola.  The camera closes up on the father’s face and he smiles.

Boy (looking at father): What is it, Papa?

Father (still smiling): It’s a treat for you.

Boy: What is it?

Father (kneels down on one knee, gestures boy to come sit on his knee): Here, sit down.

Boy (walks over and sits on his father’s lap, his father takes off his backpack and sits it down behind them. The man opens the can and we hear fizz. He gives it to the boy and the boy hesitantly smells it.): It’s bubbly.

Father (smiles and nods): Go ahead.

Boy (looks at his father and hesitantly takes a sip, then sits there for a moment. He smiles and his eyes get wide.): It’s good.

Father (smiles at his son and rubs the top of his head): Yes, it is.

Boy (extends the can towards his father, looking up at him): Have some, Papa.

Father (rubs the top of his head again): I want you to have it.

Boy (shoves the can into his father’s hands): You have some.

Father (smiles and takes the can, and takes a small sip, then exhales): You drink it. Let’s just sit here.

Boy (looks down at the ground with a sad look in his face. Looks up at his father again): It’s because i won’t ever get to drink another one, isn’t it?

Father (looks at the boy and puts his hand on his knee): Ever’s a long time. (Man smiles)

Boy (smiles, looks at the can, takes a sip. Looks back up at his father): Okay.
