{"id":20,"date":"2006-02-13T17:20:19","date_gmt":"2006-02-13T22:20:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.samplereality.com\/gmu\/spring2006\/325\/02\/13\/the-story-of-an-hour\/"},"modified":"2008-02-13T20:59:00","modified_gmt":"2008-02-14T01:59:00","slug":"the-story-of-an-hour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.samplereality.com\/gmu\/spring2006\/325\/02\/13\/the-story-of-an-hour\/","title":{"rendered":"the story of an hour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Story of an Hour<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0By Kate Chopin<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I think this is probably one of the more thought provoking short stories for me.\u00c2\u00a0 She uses so much imagery that I was lost in it.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not sure if that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a good or bad thing, because sometimes I find myself not know what the heck it was that I just read, but then some lines are so beautiful that I found myself reading it twice to soak it in.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153When the storm of grief had spent itself\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, one of my favorite lines, and I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know why, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s simple and complex at the same time.\u00c2\u00a0 After my first read, I was a bit confused because I forgot the lady\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s last name, and when Brently walked in the door, I had no idea what his relation to the woman was.\u00c2\u00a0 I also thought that she didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t pass away, that she walked down the stairs with her sister.\u00c2\u00a0 It wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t until the very last line, that I realized that the woman was dead.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say I went back for a second run.\u00c2\u00a0 The pieces started to make more sense.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the story of an hour in which this lady, consumed by the news of her husband\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s death, has no more reason to live, so her heart gave up and she died.\u00c2\u00a0 In that hour of death, she sees herself leaving her own body, so it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s like an out of body experience.\u00c2\u00a0 The irony to this story is that her husband didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t die, that he was far from the scene of the accident, he made it home only to discover his dead wife.\u00c2\u00a0 I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know why, but for some reason, while reading this, I keep thinking the story is alluding to the subject of suicide.\u00c2\u00a0 I think because she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s telling her spirit to go free, to be free.\u00c2\u00a0 Then there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the discussion she has with herself about not having no one to live for, and that no one has a right to force you to live (at least that is what I interpret the following sentence to mean).\u00c2\u00a0 To me it didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t seem like she fought at all to stay alive, but rather she embraced the possession.\u00c2\u00a0 Thats just my\u00c2\u00a0take on it.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><!--7982678d7d8fd201c53b5350e931f805--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Story of an Hour \u00c2\u00a0By Kate Chopin \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 I think this is probably one of the more thought provoking short stories for me.\u00c2\u00a0 She uses so much imagery that I was lost in it.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not sure if that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a good or bad thing, because sometimes I find myself not know what the &hellip;
