I also saw the play, after which I have read the story. I felt that the story was about Gabriel. It was about his self image and his social life. At several points of the story, I noticed the focus of the story shift to Gabriel’s reflections on his social interactions. It made him look fake to me. He was not acting based on his inclinations, but rather to uphold a certain image of himself.
\nThis idea is reflected in Gabriel’s thoughts while rehearsing his speech. When he is thinking of drawing a literary allusion in his speech, he dismisses the idea as not to look pretentious or snobbish by ridiculing their literary ignorance. At first, I thought this was considerate of him. However, the next sentence changed my thoughts. “[If he referenced literature] he would fail with them just as he had failed with the girl in the pantry” (Joyce, 24). So now I thought, he was just insecure about his social life. He feels that his conversation with the maid was a failure and he wishes not to repeat that failure with a larger group of people.
\nThe second reference to the speech I thought quite clearly displayed his self concern on his social image and nothing else. It is seen in page 35 where he finally finds the perfect introduction to the speech.\u00c2\u00a0 Of course he did not believe in any of the things he planned to say.\u00c2\u00a0 His motivation was competition and proving himself to Miss Ivors.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153What did he care that his aunts were only two ignorant old women?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (Joyce, 35).
