Welcome to ENGL 610

Welcome to the class blog for ENGL 610:002 (Spring 2008), at George Mason University. This site will be an essential component of the course…as you will soon discover.

If you are a student in ENGL 610:002, you can go ahead and register for the blog. You may also browse the class guidelines and calendar.

I’d like to hit the ground running on the first day of class, so please note that everyone should read the following article prior to Wednesday: Lee Schulman on “Taking Learning Seriously,” published by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Hi everyone. I wanted to go ahead a put up a post just to get myself started.

There seemed to be a lot of inerest in the Schulman article last night. For anyone who is interest, Mason offers a class of The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CTCH 604). Of course it doesn’t focus specifically on Literature or English. This class really changed some of my ideas about how students learn and how teachers teach.

I was not aware of that course, Edith – thanks for posting the information.

The Northern Virginia Writing Project also encourages and supports teacher research. Upon acceptance to the annual Summmer Institute, teachers develop a research based presentation on the teaching of writing and its implications in their classrooms and spend five weeks teaching and learning from each other. I was a fellow at the Summer Institute in 2005 and found it to be a life-changing experience. Mason’s Professor Gallehr is the head of the program and they are currently accepting applications for 2008. The Northern Virginia Writing Project is a wonderful institution. It’s part of the wider National Writing Project, a loose coalition of various regional writing projects. Years ago, as a high school teacher, I was a fellow at the Toledo Area Writing Project, and I too found it to be a life-changing experience.
