Link Choices for Calvino Incipits

The general methodology for choosing the links were based on word association, word context, possible historical significance.  For example, I made a reference to German light armor, therefore I created a link for the word “armor” to a WWII Nazi Flag that was found on a Panzer tank; this is a logical translation.  Another step that I took was to take a word that multiple meanings.  I used “icebreaker” to describe a breaking of social silence; however, I made a link to a literal icebreaker: liquid mints(http://www.hersheys.com/icebreakers/).  I used another play on pop culture by making the word “captain” a link to Captain’s Morgans rum(http://www.captainmorgan.com/en-us/).  Lastly, I selected another student’s piece(http://mason.gmu.edu/~rford1/assignment_files/swimming.html) which mentioned the same town upon which my incipit was based as a connection.  This student’s piece is also associated with “defiance” which is an underlying theme in my own work.

If I had made all the links historical, a virtual footnote persay, then I think the piece would have been taken more seriously.  Due to the choices I made in selecting the links, I believe it made the work somewhat more creative, but in a much more comical way, which was not the original aim of the story upon its creation.  As a result, the reader will most likely be confused when a story with a serious and depressing backdrop has links to such trivial items.

  1. Weekly blog:

I had a choose your own adventure book that focussed on the the Wild West. I took was a young guy / kid that was headed to a twon called Deadwood City. There was a mean gang in it and I decided to leave town. So, I left the city and ended up getting lost. I had two to pick between going one direction or another when lost. I I actually wanted to see which both would lead me. One direction led me eventually after a decision or two to a safe place and when I would meet family. If I took the other direction when lost, I would meet an indian who took me back to his village. There I would teach the village to speak English and then return to to my people. I tried to play the game in the book safe and avoided conflicts. I was sucessful in that and ending up not dying.
The beginning of the book on the first page reminds me of Calvino. It tells you not to read the book all the way through. It’s similiar to how Calvino at the beginning of the book is giving you sugestions in how to read his book in comfortable body positions.
I wonder how one could make a movie version of the Calvino book. The camera representing the Reader (you) could be in first person and people talking to you. If I made a choose your own adventure game based on the book, a easy way to make it would be to maybe a series of pages / Lexia in maybe Dreamweaver. Each page would present sections of the chapter you read. When you get to a point where you make a decision, you can click a link to another page. Personally, I would like to use video for each section. If this project is online, the only problem with video is that it can take a while to download depending upon what format it is saved in. I’d make the video in first person. You would never see yourself. You would maybe see your hands and legs and clothing. People would say stuff to you.

  2. I just read through my posting, please put this one on instead of the other. This one has more corrected grammar in it.

They would then act accordingly to what you said.
