The Road Scene: Special Treat

Scene 1: Special Treat (From Pages 22-23)

Opening: Fade into shot of father and son stand in front of a supermarket. The father stares in awe of what might be inside. The boy looks perplexed as to what the store will hold as well—only the boy shows more wonder and amazement to the viewing of the building. Leaving their card outside, they walk into the store with trepidation.

They begin by going down the produce isle. Bins are strewn about and the camera zooms into a bin of what used to be apricots—the father picks one up and examines it. Immediately after he throws it back in the bin and makes a face of disgust. They continue walking, and the father grabs the boy’s hand.

::Shot goes to close up of their hands holding as they continue to walk down the aisle::

They enter what once was the back stock room and continue to search for anything. Then they exit through a rear door in the building. It is snowing ash, and there if garbage all around.

::Shot starts from opposite side of doorway and they walk out, glaring over a vast see in rusting brown shopping carts, none with

suitable wheels::

They continue to back into the store and look for more carts. There is very little lighting in the store, and it’s extremely hard to see.

::Shot shows the father and son walking at the other end of each aisle in a consecutive motion as the camera follows suit on the other end of the aisle keeping views of the two::

They do not find any carts. They walk to the front of the store and come up to the some turned over soda machines. Both machines have obviously been broken into and previously raided. Light is barely showing in from the foggy and dirty windows, some smashed and completely shattered from raieders and thieves.

::shot goes to a close up of the fathers eyes diligently searching the machine for any cans. Then shot moves to the boys eyes staring at the coins lying on the floor from the gutted machine::

The father reaches into the machine and pulls out a red cylinder can and thoroughly examines his findings.

::shot goes to close up of the can in the fathers hand. Clearly reading: Coca Cola::

Son:

What is it, Papa?

Father: (Father gestures the can over to his son to take.)

It’s a treat. For you.

Son: (Grabs the can and attempts to read the label, and is unable to which can be seen in the expression on his face.)

What is it?

Father: (Shot on him)

Here sit down.

The father waves the boy to move closer. Then he takes off his backpack, one strap at a time. He takes the can from the boy, and sticks his thumbnail underneath the aluminum clip and lifts it.

::Shot goes to major close up of the father lifting the clip. As he does the can pops and fizzle with a carbonation contained for years::

The father lifts the can to his nose and sniffs if for a brief moment.

Father:

Go ahead.

The boy takes the can and mimics the same motion as his father in sniffing the can.

Son:

It’s bubbly.

Father: (Shot on him as he speaks. He smiles, a light, faint smile that is all he can muster. )

Go ahead.

He looks at his father with a child’s curiosity and lifts the can to his mouth. The label of the can clearly showing to the audience. Then shot goes to viewing of both the father and son.

Son:

It’s really good.

Father:

Yes . it is.

Son: (Gestures the can to his father.)

You have some, Papa.

Father:

I want you to drink it.

Son: (He continues to hold the can out for his father to grab.)

You have some.

The father finally takes the can from his son and takes a long sip of the soda.

Father:

You drink it. Let’s just sit here.

::Shot goes to a far away viewing of the two enjoying the can of soda together. Shot then fades to black::

End Scene.
